City centre access monitoring

Urban access regulation is adopted by many cities to control the number and type of vehicles that can enter some areas, typically the city centre. In Italy, these are called Zone a Traffico Limitato (ZTL). To monitor access to the city centre effectively, it is crucial to know the number of heavy goods vehicles circulating in the city centre and its percentage compared to the total number of vehicles entering the ZTL.

Using traditional ANPR cameras can be challenging. In this scenario, city management should record all the license plate numbers of the vehicles at the gates and then check an external database to understand whether the numbers are associated with heavy goods vehicles or not. Then a ratio should be made to compare it to the total number of vehicles in the restricted area. This method is slow and creates privacy issues.

Traffic Supervisor is the solution to evaluate the exact speed and the length of each vehicle. Traffic wireless sensors constantly monitor traffic and transmit information to a local Central Unit in real-time. The central unit processes data coming from the sensors and sends information to a LoRaWAN network server. Thanks to this system, it is possible to know whether a vehicle going in the restricted zone is a truck or a car.
Traffic Supervisor can also determine the direction of travel of each vehicle, which is particularly useful if a gate is only meant to be an entrance or exit.
