THE PROJECT
Trento is one of the first Italian cities promoting hi-tech projects in its territory to improve the life quality of its citizens. As regards smart mobility, Trento City Council decided to monitor traffic flow and parking bay occupancy using wireless sensor networks. The city decided to install Sky Light Systems by Nabla Quadro. The sensors detect whether a bay is vacant or not and monitor traffic flow across the road network.
The project started in April 2015. The system is composed of 8 sensors for parking monitoring and 16 sensors for traffic monitoring, involving two different areas in the city of Trento.
One system was initially aimed at counting vehicles. Then, the municipality decided to add a Sky Light Interface Card to obtain an adaptive traffic light control. Using this system, traffic data are sent to a server through the Access Point. At the same time, data are sent to the local traffic light controller to manage the signal timing based on real-time traffic conditions.
The other point of monitoring is a combined system for counting, classification and parking bay monitoring.
